Rules and Regulations

Runner safety is paramount

The SMC Road Race Series event are road runs in an industrial area of western Sydney.
The roads that we run on are open to and used by the public.
Generally these roads are quiet on a Sunday morning but all runners must be aware that they do not have right of way; the traffic does.
The roads are not closed for these events.
The SMC is grateful for the ongoing assistance of the State Emergency Service (SES) with traffic control.
To ensure runner safety and future of the SMC a small number of rules and regulations are strictly enforced and we request all runners be familiar with these rules.

We operate in rail, hail or shine: No rollerblades, skateboards or dogs allowed

The Rules of the Road

  • All instructions given to runners by any officials including SMC officials, SES, police etc must be followed. Failure to do so will result in disqualification from the race and if severe enough there may be a ban for the rest of the series. We have the officials in position for the safety of runners who compete in our series. Do not jeopardise the race series by putting yourself and others in danger.
  • The traffic has right of way on the streets. We do not have the authority to stop or divert traffic in any way. This includes buses on the T-Way.
  • Runners must stay to the side of the road. Do not run in the middle of the road. You may be disqualified for continuous discretions.
  • You must only cross the road at designated points. These points are clearly marked with an official sign and/or flag or with an official. Crossing at unofficial points puts yourself in danger and the series in danger. Failure to cross at official crossing points may lead to disqualification.
  • Abuse of officials, in particular SES volunteers, will not be tolerated and will be dealt with appropriately.
  • Runners who deviate from the rules above or from the official course may find themselves NOT covered by insurance in the event of an accident or other injury.

Club Rules

  • Official race bibs must be worn on the front of the shirt at all times whilst out on the course
  • Timing chips must be worn on the shoe (not around the ankle) to ensure that official times are recorded
  • You must retain your race bib and timing chip for the entire series.
  • SMC has an official timer. Only the time of the official timer will be recorded. No argument will be entered into. Your own watch is a guide to you only.
  • If you fail to complete a race, please notify the officials at the finish line. Our officials stay at the finish line until all runners are accounted for. We do not want to be left waiting for runners who never come!
  • Entry fees must be paid prior to running. Bib numbers will not be issued without payment. No credit given.
  • If you have paid for a 5 or 10km run and enter the long run, you must ensure you pay the upgrade cost at the canteen.
  • Anyone caught cheating will automatically be disqualified.
  • Any runner under 18 must have signed parental or guardian permission to enter the race.
  • Runners under 16 are not permitted to enter the long runs.

MP3 players are not permitted at SMC Road Race Events

For safety reasons runners are not permitted to wear MP3 players during any of the SMC Road Race Series events. There is a ‘minding bin’ at the start of the race for any runner who turns up to the start line and is not aware of this ban.
The ongoing support of the SES at the SMC Road Race Series events is dependent upon us enforcing this rule therefore anyone who is found to be racing with an MP3 player will have their results withheld and be disqualified from the event.
